Michael Goodson, recent sculpture

Statement:
My work starts with the assumption that perception and pathology do not
follow former after later but rather, after a time, are an amalgam.  In this
assumption I am able to tune into what I think are the marginal, irrational
and compulsive aspects of our culture vis-à-vis our selves, our identities.
Who we are, and therefore why things "are what they are", is part of a
lifelong act of accretion, a contestant adding-on to perception that is essentially
set in the social dislocation experienced in childhood.

I make work that attempts to speak to the frustration of trying to locate
oneself in an already set world.

Formally I work to reflect an aesthetic of stringent rigor that is derived
from the minimalist reformation of sculptures objecthood.  At the same time,
it shows a bias toward subjective expression, the antithesis of minimalism
as it was first theorized.  It looks cold as minimalism, but it is warm with secrets.
It looks pure, but indicates impurity.
