Statement:
Focusing on the formative
years of childhood and adolescence, my work explores the complexities of
experience and self.
I work to investigate the
subtle triggers in our culture that start planting their roots in these
early years and may eventually
lead to neurosis and instability
in identity. It is in this spectacle based media culture that we
receive clips of information
rather than a full story.
My paintings are made to act in this way; as a series of implied actions;
pieces of information
that are both ambiguous
and unequivocal. The ambiguities and missing pieces are used to lure
the viewer into a
heightened sense of unease;
parallel to the anxieties associated with the discovery of one's own identity.
What results
are non-linear stories that
are ultimately cryptic and open-ended. I work to create spaces that
paradoxically show a new
reality by partially breaking
away from the domain of what we have come to know as reality.
Often times our only link
to a memory of an event is through a photograph. Is the photographic
image an accurate
marker of our past?
My interest lies in what is not represented in the photograph. Through
the reconstruction of the
snapshot, I work to undermine
photographic reality. I use painting as a means of choreographing these
seemingly
innocuous photographs by
both obliterating parts of the image and placing focus on a slightest gesture.
The theatrical nature of
these paintings works to highlight these subtle moments that may otherwise
go unnoticed.
Within these recreations
lurk a disquieting sub-text brought about by either an ominous presence
within the
paintings themselves or
one that is projected as a surrogate onto the viewer.
